Dutch Set for Major Midseason Test at Heartland Classic

The Pella cross country teams return to the Central College Cross Country Course on Saturday for the Heartland Classic, one of the largest and most competitive regular-season meets on their schedule.

The field brings together 22 girls teams and 29 boys teams from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Fourteen ranked programs are represented in the girls competition, while the expansive boys field includes 19 ranked teams.

The varsity girls race begins at 11:20 a.m., followed by the varsity boys at 11:50 a.m. Tickets are required for spectators, and special parking instructions will be in effect because wet conditions have closed the grass parking lot.

Girls team outlook

Pella enters the Heartland Classic ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and will encounter a field with considerable strength at the front and throughout the standings.

The Dutch will compete without senior Elsie Brenneman, the third-ranked runner in Class 3A. Her absence is part of her planned racing cycle and is not related to an injury.

Even without Brenneman, Pella can place five individually ranked runners on the starting line: No. 8 Maechen Cowman, No. 9 Ruth Dunham, No. 10 Lizzy Vande Voort, No. 19 Ellie Hardman and No. 27 Erica Vos.

Pella’s seven-runner varsity lineup will include Carleigh Altwine, Maechen Cowman, Ruth Dunham, Ellie Hardman, J. Vande Voort, Lizzy Vande Voort and Erica Vos.

That depth will be tested by a field featuring Class 4A No. 2 Waukee Northwest, No. 5 Iowa City High, No. 6 Norwalk, No. 9 Dowling Catholic, No. 10 Waukee, No. 12 Linn-Mar, No. 14 Dallas Center-Grimes, No. 15 Prairie and No. 16 Southeast Polk. Nebraska Class A No. 4 Lincoln Southwest adds another highly regarded out-of-state challenger.

The smaller-school field is strong as well. In addition to top-ranked Pella, it includes Class 3A No. 5 Ballard, Class 2A No. 2 Treynor and Class 2A No. 17 Pella Christian. Lawrence brings South Dakota into the meet, creating a three-state field.

Waukee Northwest won last year’s Heartland Classic with 44 points, followed by Iowa City High with 74. Waukee, Lincoln Southwest and Prairie were separated by only four points in the battle for third through fifth.

For Pella, Saturday’s primary question is how closely its depth can match the front-end strength of the leading 4A programs without its highest-ranked runner. Cowman, Dunham and Lizzy Vande Voort give the Dutch three runners ranked among the top 10 in Class 3A, while Hardman and Vos provide two more ranked scoring options.

Altwine and J. Vande Voort will also have opportunities to strengthen Pella’s depth in a large and competitive field. The Heartland Classic should provide the clearest test yet of how the Dutch lineup holds together in a championship-style race.

Girls individual outlook

Waukee Northwest sophomore Emmy Stubbendeck, ranked second in Class 4A, and Dallas Center-Grimes sophomore Tenley Heidgerken, ranked third, headline the Iowa entries.

Linn-Mar senior Hailey Kozloski is ranked eighth in Class 4A. Norwalk has two ranked runners in No. 18 Olive Derocher and No. 21 Hannah Schmitz, while Waukee Northwest has four runners among the Class 4A top 30. Dowling Catholic junior Payton Wolfe enters ranked No. 26.

Pella’s leading trio is tightly grouped in the Class 3A rankings. Cowman is eighth, Dunham ninth and Lizzy Vande Voort 10th. Ballard sophomore Avilee Miller, ranked 13th in Class 3A, and Treynor sophomore Lily Miller, ranked 10th in Class 2A, add further small-school strength near the front.

With Brenneman sitting out, the race gives Pella’s remaining varsity runners an opportunity to assume larger roles against one of the strongest fields they will see during the regular season.

Boys team outlook

Pella enters Saturday ranked No. 14 in Class 3A and will face an exceptionally large boys field featuring 29 teams and 19 ranked programs from Iowa and Nebraska. Lawrence adds a South Dakota program to the field.

The Iowa entries are led by Class 4A No. 2 Dowling Catholic and No. 3 Waukee. Pleasant Valley, Dallas Center-Grimes, Waukee Northwest and Prairie are also ranked among the top nine in Iowa’s largest class.

Ankeny Centennial, Iowa City High, Indianola, Norwalk and Ankeny give the race 11 ranked Class 4A programs.

The depth extends across every Iowa classification. Pella Christian is ranked second in Class 2A, Red Oak is No. 18, Riverside leads Class 1A and Baxter is ranked fifth. Pella and No. 17 ADM represent Class 3A, while Fremont and Lincoln Southwest are ranked seventh and eighth, respectively, in Nebraska Class A.

Pella’s varsity lineup will include Porter Carlton, Jonah Dunham, Jonah Ebersole, Silas Gaulke, Zander Kanis, Sam Keller and Brand Vande Voort.

Carlton enters the Heartland Classic with momentum after breaking 17 minutes for the first time this season at last week’s Gilbert Invitational. His 16:58 performance helped move him to No. 26 in the Class 3A rankings, while Ebersole is ranked No. 29.

The seven-runner lineup combines Carlton and Ebersole’s senior experience with a group that continues to develop its scoring order. Dunham will receive another opportunity to build on his promising introduction to cross country, while Gaulke, Kanis, Keller and Vande Voort will look to keep Pella’s scoring pack connected in the crowded field.

In a race this large, maintaining contact will be especially important. Even small gaps between teammates can become significant point swings when hundreds of runners are spread throughout the field.

Prairie won last year’s boys race with 87 points. Dallas Center-Grimes finished second with 102, followed by Waukee Northwest with 118 and Iowa City High with 120. Pella placed seventh with 208 points.

This year’s Heartland Classic gives the Dutch a valuable measuring point against many of Iowa’s strongest teams. It should provide a clearer picture of the progress Pella has made through the opening weeks and the work that remains before the championship portion of the season.

Boys individual outlook

Marshalltown senior Preston Johnson, ranked third in Class 4A, is the highest-ranked Iowa runner expected in the boys race.

The field includes several other prominent contenders. Ankeny Centennial senior Jax Alvarez is ranked eighth in Class 4A, Dowling Catholic senior Charlie Deick is ninth and Prairie senior Cole Carrizales is 10th.

Indianola junior Jake Robidoux, Dallas Center-Grimes senior Noah Kerndt and Prairie senior Sammy Lange occupy the next three positions at No. 11, No. 12 and No. 13.

The race also brings together leading runners from Iowa’s smaller classifications. Baxter senior Max Handorf leads the Class 1A rankings, while Riverside senior Owen Fenner is fourth. Pella Christian senior Will Vanden Bosch is ranked sixth in Class 2A, one position ahead of Red Oak senior Emmanuel Grass.

Carlton and Ebersole give Pella two ranked runners in the race. Their ability to connect with the large group of ranked athletes ahead of them—and help pull the Dutch pack through the field—will be an important storyline.

What to watch

Five ranked scorers without Brenneman

Pella will not have its complete girls lineup, but all five of its likely scorers appear in the Class 3A individual rankings. Saturday will show how that group responds when every position carries greater weight.

Pella against elite 4A depth

The girls field includes nine ranked Class 4A programs, led by No. 2 Waukee Northwest. Pella’s ability to place five scorers ahead of the deeper portions of those lineups will be central to the team standings.

Carlton’s momentum

Carlton enters the meet after his first sub-17 performance of the season. His continued progress could provide an important lift for a Pella boys team facing its largest and deepest field of the year.

A loaded boys starting line

With 29 teams and 19 ranked programs, the boys race will demand good positioning from the opening kilometer. The Dutch will need to avoid becoming trapped behind large groups and continue moving through the field over the second half of the course.

Championship-style race density

Large fields can change how a race develops. Both Pella teams will need to establish position early, manage congestion and remain composed as the number of runners magnifies every pass and every gap.

Important parking information

Wet conditions have closed the grass spectator parking lot. With a very large field expected, spectators should allow additional time and follow the designated parking and entrance instructions.

• Spectator parking will not be available along Fifield Road.
• Spectators should park in the Walmart parking lot or legally along nearby side streets at their own risk.
• Do not park in private business lots.
• All spectators must enter the course through Dan and Jerry’s Greenhouse at 1807 Fifield Road.
• Do not cross private property or neighboring businesses to reach the course.
• No meet parking will be available on the Central College campus or in the athletic parking lot next to Kuyper Fieldhouse.

Team vehicles should turn south from Washington Street onto 10th Avenue West. Athletes and coaches will be dropped off at the entrance to Dan and Jerry’s Greenhouse, not inside the greenhouse parking lot. The course is approximately a 200-meter walk from the drop-off point.

Teams should also be prepared to carry their own tents because carts will not be available.
