Saturday’s Heartland Classic delivered exactly what its reputation suggests: a deep field, difficult racing and a meaningful test for the Pella Cross Country teams.

With temperatures hovering around 79 degrees and rain leaving the Central College course muddy and soft, fast times were difficult to come by. Instead, the day became a test of racing, toughness and depth.

For the Pella girls, that translated into an impressive runner-up finish in the 20-team varsity field, just eight points behind Waukee Northwest. The Dutch scored 74 points to Northwest’s 66 and placed four runners among the first 19 finishers.

For the boys, it was another opportunity for a young and developing lineup to experience a high-level championship-style field. Pella finished 12th among 28 varsity teams with 349 points.

Girls Show Their Depth

The biggest takeaway from the girls race may have been how many different ways Pella could attack the field.

Freshman Maechen Cowman again led the Dutch, finishing third overall in 19:37.0. Senior Ruth Dunham wasn’t far behind, placing seventh in 20:09.2.

But Pella’s strength extended well beyond the front two.

Freshman Ellie Hardman continued her outstanding first high school season with a 13th-place finish in 20:34.9, while junior Erica Vos crossed 19th in 20:52.0.

That gave Pella four runners in the top 20 of a large and talented field.

Junior Lizzy Vande Voort completed the scoring five in 32nd at 21:13.0. Freshman Joanna VandeVoort finished 43rd in 21:31.2, and junior Dana McCulla was 57th in 22:07.1. Pella’s scoring five averaged 20:29.3 with a 1:36.1 spread.

The Dutch scored 74 points against a field that included many of the state’s largest programs. Waukee Northwest won with 66, while Dallas Center-Grimes finished third.

For a Pella team whose season ultimately revolves around what happens late in October and beyond, Heartland offered another encouraging piece of evidence: the Dutch don’t have to rely on a single runner to carry them.

Cowman continues to establish herself at the front, Dunham provides senior strength, Hardman has emerged immediately as a freshman, and Vos continues to give Pella another reliable presence inside the scoring group.

That depth remains one of the most important pieces of Pella’s Drive for Five pursuit.

Boys Get Another Championship-Level Test

The boys race offered a different challenge.

With 28 scoring teams, there was little room for mistakes or gaps in the field. Pella finished 12th with 349 points, just behind Norwalk and ahead of Urbandale.

Senior Jonah Ebersole led the Dutch with a strong 37th-place performance, covering the muddy 5K course in 18:30.6.

Porter Carlton followed in 56th at 19:00.2, with sophomore Zander Kanis third for Pella in 19:21.3.

Junior Sam Keller finished in 19:32.2, and sophomore Brandt VandeVoortclosed out the scoring five in 19:48.0. Senior Caleb Punt ran 20:19.4, while freshman Jonah Dunham completed the varsity lineup in 20:25.9.

The Dutch averaged 19:14.5 across their scoring five with a 1:17.4 spread.

The result doesn’t offer the same kind of headline as the girls’ runner-up performance, but it does continue an important theme for this year’s boys team.

This is a group being asked to grow quickly.

Pella has experienced runners at the front, but it also continues to integrate younger runners into meaningful varsity roles. Heartland provided another opportunity to race in a crowded, high-quality field where positioning, patience and competing through adversity mattered as much as the clock.

Those experiences will become increasingly valuable as the Dutch continue their pursuit of a fifth consecutive state trophy.

JV Girls Finish Fourth

Pella’s depth also showed in the junior varsity girls race.

The Dutch placed fourth with 109 points behind Waukee Northwest, City High and Waukee. Pella’s top five averaged 23:45.7.

Junior Bryn Paulsen led Pella with an excellent fifth-place finish in 22:11.0, while freshman Georgia Ferebee finished 10th in 22:52.2.

Junior Anna Dobson was Pella’s third scorer in 23:57.8, followed by sophomore Ketziah Wittenberg in 24:26.2 and sophomore McKyndree Treft in 25:21.2.

The presence of two Dutch runners in the JV top 10 provided another encouraging indication of the depth developing behind Pella’s varsity seven.

JV Boys Place Ninth

Pella’s JV boys finished ninth in another extremely large field, scoring 245 points — only two behind eighth-place Waukee Northwest.

Senior Caiden Tuel led Pella in 20:59.4, followed by junior Coben Browne in 21:19.4 and sophomore Silas Gaulke in 21:24.9.

Freshman Finn Jones ran 21:41.6 as Pella’s fourth scorer, while junior Owen Gauley completed the scoring five in 22:29.3.

Pella’s top five averaged 21:35.0.

What Heartland Told Us

Heartland wasn’t a day built for chasing personal records.

The weather and soft course changed the equation. It became much more about competing against people than competing against the clock.

And Pella came away with useful information on both sides.

For the girls, the performance reinforced the team’s most encouraging early-season development: depth continues to emerge around an already strong core. Cowman, Hardman and Vos have increasingly become significant parts of the varsity story, while Dunham and Vande Voort continue to provide experienced strength.

For the boys, Heartland provided another important repetition against deep competition. Ebersole led the way, Carlton remained firmly in the front group for Pella, and younger runners continue accumulating the experiences they’ll need when the stakes rise later this fall.

There is still plenty of season ahead.

But on a warm, muddy morning at Central College, the Dutch received another valuable measuring stick.

And for the Pella girls in particular, finishing just eight points from the top of a field this strong offered another indication that the Drive for Five remains very much on course.
