Saturday will be the Dutch program’s first of two competitions at Central College this season. Pella will return to its home course September 19 for the Heartland Classic.
The girls race will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the boys at 9:10. The meet features one race for each gender, placing varsity, junior varsity and freshman runners together on the same starting line.
The format will give the Dutch their first complete look at the depth of both programs while bringing 13 ranked teams and 20 ranked individuals to Pella.
Girls Team Outlook
Pella enters its home meet as the top-ranked team in Class 3A and the leader of a deep field that includes eight ranked programs across three classifications.
No. 14 ADM and No. 18 Gilbert join Pella from Class 3A. The field also includes No. 19 Pella Christian from Class 2A and four ranked Class 1A teams: No. 5 English Valleys, No. 14 Collins-Maxwell, No. 17 Lynnville-Sully and No. 18 Pleasantville.
The Dutch opened their season by winning the Orange Division at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational with 31 points. Pella placed five runners among the first 21 in the combined field and recorded a top-five average of approximately 19:57.
Junior Lizzy Vande Voort led the Dutch with a fifth-place finish in 19:15.3. Senior Ruth Dunham, juniors Carleigh Altwine and Erica Vos, and junior Dana McCulla completed Pella’s scoring group.
Pella also received strong performances in Prairie’s junior varsity and freshman races. That depth will now be placed into a single race, giving several runners an opportunity to challenge for positions within the Dutch lineup.
Pella dominated last year’s home invitational with 16 points and a 19:02.1 top-five average. The Dutch placed five scoring runners among the first six finishers and defeated runner-up Gilbert by 74 points.
This year’s field should create a much tighter race for the remaining team awards. ADM and Gilbert give Pella two ranked Class 3A opponents, while English Valleys enters as the fifth-ranked team in Class 1A.
Pella will attempt to defend its home championship while validating its No. 1 ranking.
Girls Individual Outlook
Vande Voort enters Saturday as the highest-ranked Class 3A runner in the field at No. 7. Her Prairie performance established her as one of the leading contenders for the individual championship.
She will have plenty of familiar company near the front.
Freshman Maechen Cowman made her debut at No. 11 in the Class 3A rankings after winning the Prairie 4K in 15:01.1. Her performance was the fastest 4K time recorded by a Pella girl since the Dutch began competing at Prairie.
Cowman will move to the full 5K distance Saturday.
Dunham is ranked 15th in Class 3A, followed by Altwine at No. 22, freshman Elliana Hardman at No. 23 and Vos at No. 27. That gives Pella six ranked runners in the field, including two freshmen.
Senior Elsie Brenneman did not compete at Prairie and consequently does not appear in the Week 2 rankings. If she makes her season debut Saturday, the former state runner-up would add another proven frontrunner to the race.
Mount Pleasant sophomore Avery Fedler, ranked No. 16 in Class 3A, should also contend near the front. Other ranked challengers include No. 15 Jayden Peters of Collins-Maxwell and No. 19 Emma Parkinson of Lynnville-Sully in Class 1A, along with No. 25 Hayley Rens of Pella Christian in Class 2A.
While the rankings are separated by classification and are not direct head-to-head seedings, they point toward a front group with considerable experience and emerging young talent.
Boys Team Outlook
The boys race features five ranked teams and should provide Pella with a significant early-season test.
The Dutch enter the week ranked No. 11 in Class 3A. They will face No. 2 Chariton and No. 5 Pella Christian from Class 2A, along with No. 5 Baxter and No. 7 Lynnville-Sully from Class 1A.
Although rankings from different classifications cannot be compared directly, each of the four smaller-school challengers ranks among the top seven in its class.
Pella finished second in the Orange Division at Prairie behind Clear Creek-Amana, which moved to No. 8 in this week’s Class 3A rankings.
The most encouraging part of Pella’s opener was the strength of its pack. Sophomore Zander Kanis, senior Jonah Ebersole and sophomore Brandt Vande Voort finished within six seconds of one another. Sophomore Silas Gaulke and junior Sam Keller completed a scoring group separated by only 35.7 seconds.
That compact group will be critical Saturday.
Chariton brings two of the highest-ranked individuals in the meet, while Pella Christian has three runners in the Class 2A rankings. Baxter and Lynnville-Sully each have multiple ranked runners in Class 1A.
Pella placed second behind Gilbert at the 2025 invitational. Gilbert is not entered in this year’s boys race, but the presence of four ranked challengers means the path to a home championship will not be simple.
Places gained or lost by each team’s fourth and fifth runners could determine the final order.
Boys Individual Outlook
Chariton’s Lucas Anderson and Cy Stuart enter as the top two runners in the Class 2A rankings and the clearest individual favorites.
Anderson placed sixth at last year’s Pella Invitational in 16:24.6, while Stuart finished 11th in 16:46.0. Both opened the new season strongly enough to occupy the first two positions in their classification.
Pella Christian senior Will VandenBosch is ranked sixth in Class 2A. Teammate Griffin Stoltz is No. 21, and junior Dean DeRonde is No. 28.
The Class 1A field is led by No. 3 Max Handorf and No. 6 Brecken Fisher of Baxter. Lynnville-Sully counters with No. 9 Colton Alberts and No. 13 Blake Wilmesmeier. Baxter junior Maddux Tuhn is ranked 21st.
Pella does not have an individually ranked boy this week, but its compact varsity group gives several Dutch runners an opportunity to enter that conversation.
Kanis led Pella at Prairie in 17:41.0, followed by Ebersole in 17:42.2 and Vande Voort in 17:47.0. Gaulke ran 18:09.6, while Keller finished in a personal-best 18:16.7.
Freshman Jonah Dunham adds another intriguing possibility. Dunham won the Prairie Orange Division 4K title and placed fourth in the combined race with a time of 14:18.2. Saturday will be his first high school race over the full 5K distance.
One Race, One Program
The Pella Invitational’s combined format creates a different kind of early-season test.
Rather than separating athletes into varsity, junior varsity and grade-level races, every eligible runner will compete over the same course at the same time. The format will give younger runners an opportunity to race alongside the program’s leaders and provide the coaching staff with a clearer picture of the developing order within each team.
The freshman runners will make the most significant transition. After opening their seasons over 4,000 meters at Prairie, they will race their first high school 5Ks Saturday.
For the established varsity runners, the meet offers an opportunity to compete for team and individual championships in front of the home crowd. For those pursuing varsity positions, it is a chance to close gaps and compete directly with the runners ahead of them.
