The Pella cross country teams return to the starting line Tuesday, September 29, at the Williamsburg Invitational. For the boys and the girls who did not travel to Gans Creek, it will be their first race in more than a week. A stretch of solid workouts and recovery has given them time to build, and Tuesday offers the first look at how that work translates to racing.

The girls’ race brings a particular opportunity. All 10 Pella runners who competed at Friday’s Gans Creek Classic will rest at Williamsburg, opening varsity spots for the next group in line. The Dutch enter the meet ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, but Tuesday’s result will be shaped by runners stepping into a different role.

It is a chance to gain experience, race together and show the depth behind Pella’s top group as October approaches.

Host Williamsburg provides an immediate test. The Raiders are ranked No. 3 in Class 3A and feature two ranked individuals: No. 7 Harper Winegarden and No. 27 Channing Becker. No. 7 Mount Vernon-Lisbon brings the class’s top-ranked runner, Evelyn Moeller. No. 14 ADM and No. 17 Solon add to the Class 3A competition.

The field reaches well beyond Pella’s classification. Class 2A No. 4 Van Meter features No. 2 Laura Streck and No. 11 Ivory Stoffa, while No. 7 Tipton brings No. 6 Avery Mente. Pella Christian, Central Lee and PCM are also ranked in Class 2A.

For the Dutch, the opportunity goes beyond seeing how high one runner can finish. Five runners count toward the varsity team score, so staying connected and competing through the middle of a deep field will matter. Williamsburg gives this group a chance to put a full week of preparation into practice and establish what it can contribute when called upon.

Boys: A fresh test after a week away from racing

The Pella boys, ranked No. 13 in Class 3A, also arrive after a full week without a meet. The break has allowed for workouts and recovery following the Heartland Classic, and Williamsburg will provide a useful measure of where the Dutch stand heading into October.

Several Class 3A teams near Pella in the rankings are scheduled to compete. No. 6 Mount Vernon-Lisbon leads that group, with No. 12 Bondurant-Farrar, No. 14 Carlisle and No. 17 ADM also in the field. Those matchups give the Dutch a chance to see how their training week carries over against teams they will continue to measure themselves against this season.

There is strength across classifications, too. Pella Christian enters ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, while PCM is No. 12 and Van Meter is No. 15. Class 1A No. 5 Baxter adds another strong team to the race.

The individual field should be competitive from the front through the scoring positions. Bondurant-Farrar’s Ryler Hanson is ranked No. 6 in Class 3A, Mount Vernon-Lisbon’s Anthony Armstrong is No. 28, and Solon’s Anders Holmes is No. 30. Pella Christian brings ranked runners Dean DeRonde, Griffin Stoltz and Will Vanden Bosch. PCM’s Owen Osterhaus is No. 9 in Class 2A, while Baxter features Class 1A No. 2 Max Handorf and No. 9 Brecken Fisher.

For Pella, the key will be how the boys compete together. In a field with contenders from three classes, each place gained can affect the team standings. After a week focused on training and recovery, Tuesday is an opportunity to turn that work into a strong collective race.
