Girls Team Race

The Dutch girls are coming off two historic victories, winning both the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational and their home meet, the Pella Invitational, last week. At the Pella meet, the team set a record for the fastest team average in school history, clocking in at 18:40. This week, they will compete against 14 ranked teams from three different classifications, including the top-ranked teams from 1A, 2A, and 3A. Expect tough competition, especially from the talented 2A Van Meter team and the 1A Madrid team. Pella will also face a few strong teams they haven’t traditionally raced against, including the fast-rising Forest City team, currently ranked #4 in 2A. This race promises to be fast and fiercely competitive.

Boys Team Race

For the second week in a row, the top two teams in 3A will face off as #1 Gilbert takes on #2 Pella. While Pella came close last time, they still have some work ahead. Alongside these two, eight other ranked teams will be competing, eager to push the leaders. Forest City, the #1 team in 2A, has had a meteoric rise and will be looking to solidify their status as a favorite in what could be a very fast race. Also in the mix is traditional 3A powerhouse Carlisle, whose pack-running strategy could prove effective.

Athlete Spotlight

Fast Girls on a Fast Course

For the second week in a row, Dutch junior Marissa Ferebee has run under 18 minutes. On this fast course, she has a strong chance to do it again. The course record of 17:56.4 that was set by Marley Turk of Ames just last week, could be in jeopardy.

Marissa’s toughest competition may come from her sophomore teammate, Elsie Brenneman, who has been close to breaking the 18-minute barrier in her last two races. This course presents a great opportunity for her to achieve that milestone. North Polk sophomore Alexis Hergenreter, along with Van Meter’s Laura Streck and Madrid’s talented Madelyn Grothus, could also contend for the top spot.

Boys Team Race

Dutch junior Canaan Dunham enters this race as a favorite. He picked up his first win last week when he ran an all-time best 5k at the Central College course when he ran 15:16. The challengers to Dunham will likely come from the talented sophomores from Gilbert, Logan Bleich and Jacob Tallman. They have run fast on there home course before and are looking for an upset. The course record was set last week when Ethan Zuber dipped under 15 completing the course in 14:56.5.
